Migration provides one of the best opportunities for an individual to relocate and work in different countries. Immigration is the movement of people into a country to which they are not native in order to settle there as permanent residents.
Immigrants are forced to leave their native countries for a variety of reasons, including a lack of resources or simply those who wish to change one's surroundings etc. People have moved from their home countries for centuries, for all sorts of reasons.
Migrant numbers have risen rapidly in the last decade. In 2013 there were thought to be over 230 million international migrants. For some migrants, education is the primary pull factor. Some migration is for personal reasons, based on a relationship (e.g. to be with family or a partner), such as in family reunification.
Migrants are drawn increasingly to other countries such due to the following factors:
- International transport has never been easier and is cheaper than ever, relative to incomes.
- Many people in other parts of the world speak English.
- Young people move in order to get better jobs or improve their qualifications, including their language skills.
Some negative factors compel people to migrate to other countries as following:
- Lack of prospects for career advancement
- Low incomes
- High unemployment rates
